The last few decades have seen a revolution in the cosmetic and beauty products industry. The focus on natural and organic products has caused most cosmetics giants to launch their own lines of natural skin and beauty care products.
It is well-known now that chemical based cosmetics are harmful for your skin, especially in the long run. Thus more and more, people are turning to products containing natural ingredients. The skin is the body’s largest organ, and we should care for it the same way my pham obagi as we do for the other organs. We are careful to maintain a healthy diet; we should give our skin the same importance and monitor what we apply on it.
There are many contents found in a lot of traditional skin care products that are cocktails of chemicals and have been known to cause allergies. Some believe that plant-based products are better able to imitate the skin’s structure and support its health.
Here are a few ingredients which one should watch out for:
• Sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate are used as foaming agents, they cause drying and sometimes eczema.
• The different forms of parabens as preservatives may cause rashes and other allergic reactions and are commonly found in skin care products.
• Diethanolamine (DEA) is used mainly for its foaming and emulsifying properties and has been associated with allergic reactions and eye irritation.
• Though mineral oil is a natural ingredient, it is a by-product of crude oil, which as we know is extracted from the earth. The question you have to ask yourself is – do I want to put something that is a by-product of the petrochemical industry on my skin?
While choosing which cosmetics to use, one should remember that natural ingredients too can cause allergies especially on very sensitive skin. However the chances of such ingredients causing allergies is much lower than their chemical counterparts.
What you should look for in a cosmetic?
You will see a lot of products on the shelves with the words “organic” or “natural” or even “green”. Remember that many of these are just marketing schemes and in a lot of cases the use of these terms is not regulated, so read the labels very carefully, preferably glance through the contents of the product.
It is equally important to maintain your skin from the inside and not just from the outside. Eating a balanced diet with a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking plenty of water and using the right kind and quantity of oils and spices in your cooking, avoiding processed food and oily and spicy food, really is the best way to maintain a healthy, glowing and soft skin.
